Introduction to Literatures in English (LEG 246) is mandatory for all degree-seeking undergraduate students of English and Portuguese Languages and Literatures (Letras: Português-Inglês). The course has been designed to serve as an introduction to texts of the different literary genres (poetry, fiction, and theater) from US and British well-known writers. Introduction to Literatures in English aims at providing the students with the most basic knowledge for the critical appreciation of literary texts in English. The negotiation between the contextual and the intrinsic elements of literary texts is regarded as one of the most relevant skills the students must develop in their course towards reading critically. It is also of critical importance that the students become aware of the multiple possibilities of reading translations as part of their development as accurate readers of literature.
